Hedda Gabler Essay Example For Students

Hedda Gabler Essay Hedda Gabler is profoundly distracted with the idea of intensity. How much is this announcement intelligent of Ibsens play? In Ibsens play Hedda Gabler, the idea of intensity is found in the between relationship of the characters, drove by Hedda Gabler the fundamental hero. It is a mind boggling investigation of Human Beings and their place in the force circle inside Hedda Gabler; their control over others, how they identify with force and how the idea of intensity can be ruinous or put to higher purposes, contingent upon how it is utilized. The idea of intensity comes in a few structures, in different degrees. They are the force one has over others, the ability to control, to impact, control over circumstances, power in utilizing different forces to fulfill ones end. Ibsen likewise investigates the force battles between characters, the intensity of good and abhorrence, the intensity of Alcohol; the force society has over its occupants and the intensity of the Law. For one to comprehend this nature of intensity that Ibsen expounds on, one must know, in addition to other things that Power is information and Knowledge is power. In the play, the ability to control or control lies fundamentally in the possession of the individuals who have extra information and knowledge which gives them predominance over circumstances and different characters. For Brack and Hedda, this is particularly evident. Brack is an appointed authority and along these lines would be aware of a great deal of data and he utilizes this to get what he needs. In Act 1, Brack illuminates Tesman of Loveborgs appearance and its capability of demolishing Tesmans vocation possibilities. He utilizes it as a preoccupation, so that Tesman will be excessively distracted with this to see Bracks plan to get Hedda. Brack additionally utilizes this capacity to compromise Hedda, further on in the play when she will not engage in extramarital relations with him. All through the play, one observers Hedda as a manipulative, harmful and commanding ladies, ready to cajole her better half into satisfying her every impulse and to convince her encompassing characters to act without wanting to. Hedda utilizes this intensity of information to control Lovborg into drinking. She utilizes what she is aware of the relationship of trust among Lovborg and Thea and wrecks this trust, which causes Lovborg to separate and surrender to the beverage once more. In a few cases, she utilizes earlier information to occupy or dispose of Tesman. For example when Brack discloses to Lovborg that surfaced through the nursery which would provoke Tesman to inquire as to why, Hedda changes the headings of his idea by asking what are those books youve got there? Later when she needs to seize the original copy Tesman discovered, she rapidly diverts him once more with Miss Tesmans pressing letter. Hedda has a method of controlling everybody around her and along these lines Tesman, Thea, Brack and Lovborg all appear to be small strings at her mercy and she plans to tie and loosen these strings as she wishes regardless of them by any stretch of the imagination. Self destruction exists as the last choice for Hedda to show control and predominance over herself and the characters in the play. Lovborgs passing, which awards Brack with the capacity to coerce Hedda and permits Tesman and Mrs. Elvsted to start an apparently close and involved acquaintance, esteems Hedda pointless inside her social gathering. Added to this is in spite of the way that she is hitched to Tesman, she is as yet a similar individual she was previously. She will never have a place with anyone and she isnt anybodys anything, which is the reason she murders herself. She doesnt need her destiny constrained by a youngster, on the grounds that the kid will seal the joining among her and Tesman for all time. Hedda then exchanges her now purposeless conduct to her condition, inwards, towards herself, making her last demonstration of control her own life. .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be , .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .postImageUrl , .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .focused content territory { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be , .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:hover , .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:visited , .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:active { border:0!important; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; murkiness: 1; progress: mistiness 250ms; webkit-change: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:active , .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:hover { darkness: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .focused content region { width: 100%; position: rela tive; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; text-adornment: underline; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; outskirt span: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-fringe range: 3px; text-adjust: focus; text-design: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9e ce400be .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u559a7cbd01c44f0f1a897bf9ece400be:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Another squabble between the Montague and Capulet families EssayPower applied over others and the ability to impact may not generally produce unsafe outcomes. Despite the fact that Mrs. Elvsted gives the impression of being agreeable, weak, frail and oblivious, she has the extraordinary capacity as a dream for Lovborg and later, Tesman, and afterward came that excellent, cheerful time, when I shared his work. Was permitted to support him! At the point when he composed anything, we generally needed to do it together. which Hedda will never have. Her control over Lovborg varies from Heddas manipulative style of coordinating. The reckless, Lo vborg was recovered, he left off his old ways. Not on the grounds that asked him to however he knew good that didnt like such a thing. And afterward he surrendered it (drinking). Here, Elvsteds brand of intensity originates from a decent source and Lovborg changes by the integrity of her heart. When Hedda attempts to do similarly, by making Lovborg ace of himselfFlushed and certain with vine leaves in his hair she comes up short and his accommodation to wine brings about his demise (abhorrent) in light of the fact that her intentions are not unadulterated, she needs Lovborg to succeed in light of the fact that she needs to experience her wants through him. Hedda utilizes her control over Lovborg and Tesman and experiences her life through Lovborg and Tesman on the grounds that she has no capacity to escape from the constrainment of society and its desires on her, the commanders little girl. The despondent thing about Lovborg is that he needs to control the world, yet can't control himself. His new book (the original copy) manages the future, the future course of human progress, yet while he is arranging the fate of the world, he annihilates his very own salvation by loosing control and surrendering to the intensity of liquor. The incongruity is that Hedda may appear the most prevailing and incredible character in the play, however for all her insight, commanding will and information, she can't conflict with society and its standards. Hedda, the controller of people, is caught inside a case, a lifeless figurative item and its imprisonment succeeds on account of her dread of embarrassment and her purposeful devotion to Tesman. One sees Hedda taking her live at long last since she needs to live under the intensity of Brack when she has consistently had the control over others; she can't take another person having control over her. As a general rule, Hedda has no mental fortitude. Society has no control over Mrs. Elvsted in light of the fact that she has the fearlessness Hedda needs, which is to resist society and leaves her significant other for affection. Ironicly the component that gives Hedda her capacity her place and being raised as the Generals little girl in the public arena, is additionally the very thing that denies her of her capacity and her failure to act against her reality. In the play, Ibsen permits the agent of the law to be taken by a miscreant and its importance lies in the way that Brack as the adjudicator, represents the image of intensity. As an appointed authority, only he settles on the decision, the destiny of the individual. For this situation, he is in charge of Heddas destiny/life. As an appointed authority, Brack likewise stands up as a spectator, the individual who sees what is happening, hence he is the main character who isn't under any power. Ibsens Hedda Gabler is the result of a brain profoundly engrossed with the idea of intensity. Hedda Gabler is a progression of individual crusades for control and mastery: over oneself, over others and more than ones world.

Longfellow- Writing Incorporates Religion - 1470 Words

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow incorporates religious themes into his poetical work. His religious beliefs were in favor of his Christian faith, unlike others who found all the negative aspects of Catholicism. His poetical works such as Christus, The Divine Tragedy and The Bells of San Blas show his positivity toward the Catholic church. In Longfellow s life, he went through periods of depression as a reaction to his wives deaths. During these times of sorrow, Longfellow turned to his faith which helped him move through the mourning process. In Longfellow s pre-poet days, he served as a priest and went to college attending a religious class. Longfellow took his religion seriously, and expressed his fealty through his work.†¦show more content†¦Stanza two in God s-Acre insinuates how sacred the name God s Acre is and how the deceased are comfortable in their graves knowing that they are going toward heaven. In Blind Bartimeus, Longfellow inserts religion throughout the whole poe m. For example line four It is Christ of Nazareth! exclaims the coming of Christ. This poem tells the tale of Christ curing the blind. Longfellow shows his faith through this poem telling about a common bible story. Longfellow s recoil from several aspects of the contemporary religious scheme cause him to lose much of his professional hope for the future. Another work of Longfellow that included his faith was entitled The Divine Tragedy. A character in The Divine Tragedy named Martha says, Lord, dost thou care not that my sister Mary hath left me thus to wait on thee alone? I pray thee, bid her help me. Longfellow shows Jesus s superiority through this character. Jesus always helped people in need, and throughout the epic, Longfellow uses characters to ask for help from Christ in order to show his divine trait and the helper of all in need. This play was composed in three acts and was based on the biblical account of Christ s life. Longfellow intended to be a treatment of Hebraism and Hellenism. Hebraism is the religion of Jewish people who practice based on the Old Testament and the Talmud, and Hellenism is the principle and ideals associated with classical Greek civilization. To do sympathise with curley or do you condemn her free essay sample

Throughout the 1930s in California, where and when the novel of mice and men was set, women were frequently suppressed and treated as objects. They were put down and often abused. They were forced to do anything their husband says otherwise they were condemned by the family and general public. Several of these issues are reflected in the character of Curleys wife. This character is portrayed in many different ways in the different stages of her life. This character is nameless and is only ever referred to as Curleys wife. I think this may mean that she is not a major part and as a woman is thought of as insignificant and maybe Steinbeck feels that it is not necessary to name her as it was viewed at the time as she does not need or deserve one. This is why I think that she should be sympathised. The men that work on the ranch have a different opinion as they call her a â€Å"tart† and â€Å"jail bait† they call her this because she flirts with the other ranch hands despite being married to curly. We will write a custom essay sample on To do sympathise with curley or do you condemn her or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page By using the word â€Å"jail† it shows that it is like being in a prison for her and she is stuck there. This is our very first introduction of Curley’s wife which makes a big impact on how we view her for the rest of the story. From this point onwards we always think of her as looking for trouble and living up to her name as being â€Å"jail bait†. Different readers would have different impressions of her as they may feel they could connect with her. A woman feels sorry for her because she is stuck at the barn with a load of men and was not able to for fill her dream of becoming an actor. As a man may think that she is just there to cause trouble. Another reason to feel sorry for her is because she is lonely, â€Å"Think I’m gonna stay in that two-by four house and listen to how Curley’s gonna lead with his left twice, and then bring in the ol’ right cross. † This shows that Curley’s wife is very lonely, as are so many people in the novel and is trapped in a loveless marriage. Finally, she could be sympathised for because she had her dreams ruined. She was told that she was going to be put in the movies but she never did. â€Å"He says he was gonna put me in the movies. † By saying she was going to be â€Å"in the movies† is shows that she was going to have a perfect life but not everything turns out right and you can end up with nothing. Although, at some points in the book you have no sympathy for Curley’s wife and you condemn her. An example of this would be when she is horrible to crooks and threatens him with lynching. â€Å"You know what I can do if you open your Trap† This shows that she can be vindictive and she will use the power her status gives her even if it is totally unfair. By using the word â€Å"trap† it shows that once she is there it is hard to get away and she is stuck. When she dies I feel sorry for her as she never meant no harm to anyone and was just looking for company, not for sex, as she had no one to talk to. Another reason why I feel sorry for her I because she died due to Lennie’s incapableness of controlling himself. Another person’s view may be that the death was â€Å"futile†. To conclude, I feel sympathetic for Curley’s wife as she was promised dreams that she never got . She got married to a man that did not love her and she lived her life seeking attention and love which she did not get from her husband, In return all the men turned their noses up at her and thought she was there to cause trouble. A quote, when she dies, which sums her up would be â€Å"she was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young. † This shows that she was never really evil and her punishment outweigh all crimes she may have committed.

Allegory of the cave essayEssay Writing Service

Allegory of the cave essayEssay Writing Service Allegory of the cave essay Allegory of the cave essayMy perception of reality may and, in all probability, does differ from reality since the reality is a highly subjective issue, if perceived at the individual level. As I perceive the surrounding world or reality, I am still vulnerable to biases that affect my perception of reality. In the course of my personal development I have acquired some personal experience and shaped my basic values, views and beliefs which interfere into my perception of reality. As a   result, the reality may differ from the reality which I perceive subjectively. To eliminate biases and to make me perceiving reality as it is, I need to get rid of those biases and subjectivity which prevents me from accurate perception of reality. In this regard, the critical thinking of reality can help me to minimize the subjectivity of my perception. For instance, I can doubt in actually any issue which I can perceive in the surrounding world, such as the Sun going from the East to the West create s the impression of going around the Earth but, using critical thinking, I should admit the opposite idea and find out the truth through observations and experiments. However, I cannot apply such critical thinking every time I dealt with reality. My perception of reality remains subjective since I have to take many issues for granted. Otherwise, I would not have done a tenth of those activities, which I do on the regular basis. In this regard, my perception of reality also depends on mass media and my social environment since messages I receive from them affect my perception of reality too. Critical thinking and objective analysis are the main ways to break those bonds imposed on me by mass media and my social environment.

The biggest challenge facing your national economy today Essay

The biggest challenge facing your national economy today - Essay Example Almost every economy in the world is somehow related to the US economy and therefore, even a minor effect on it could have larger impacts on the economies of different countries. There are a number of problems and challenges being faced by the economy of United States today. The biggest problem, however, is the increasing debt which is considered to be the largest debt to be faced by any country. This includes household, local and state government as well as federal government debt. This debt has been accumulated over the past thirty years and has been growing much faster than the overall level of GDP. This poses serious threat for the economy as sooner or later this debt bubble will burst just like the housing bubble which led to the financial crisis in 2007. The bursting of the debt bubble will cripple the entire economy as it has become dependant on borrowing and debt. Nearly all the transactions of the economy is done on a credit basis, adding to the overall national debt. A burst of this bubble would affect the increasing standard of living being enjoyed by the citizens of America today. The household debt has increased by about 1700% since the year 197 1and around 46% of Americans are dependant on credit cards (Michael, June 2012). The second component of the national debt is the local and state government`s debt has crossed the 3 trillion dollar mark as most of the state governments are becoming bankrupt due to the increasing level of debts. Along with this, the federal government has been facing a hug amount of debt as well which has reached the dollar 16 trillion mark. In the recent years, around 3 trillion dollars of debt have been added to the overall level of national debt. The percentage of national debt is said to get more than double if the amount of household, federal and local governments` debt continues to rise at similar rate. Similar cases of increasing debt have been observed in Greece,

Reflection - Essay Example d is critical than ever in journalism to ensure speed and accuracy in recording and reporting news (University of Kent, 2011) I have a thick skin and like meeting strangers Journalism requires meeting strangers both high profile and ordinary people, sometimes asking uncomfortable questions, that require a journalist to develop a thick skin (University of Kent, 2011) Am good in creativity and have a sense of humor Presenting any news requires creativity in ensuring one attracts the attention of the audience and presenting facts in an easy straightforward, but creative way. Personal skill Reflection Some of the major requirements essential in journalism have already been applied in different platforms as portrayed above. These include the use of high end cameras to shoot long-range cameras, where the Canon D90 and D60 cameras were used in picnics. In addition, due to the strong urge of being a journalist, I managed to attend a shorthand seminar course involving some practicing journali sts where were awarded shorthand certificates, though practice is still needed to prefect these skills. My qualities of being an entertaining communicator at all levels are essential in journalism. Meeting people and covering news requires interaction with different people; a good communicator will attract the attention of many people, which will be a major success in journalism. In addition, to being an entertainer and an eloquent speaker, I have already developed a thick skin and can effectively mix with the high profile personalities and ask even the hard questions with confidence. Developing a thick skin requires development of courage and determination to get to the root of any story despite the hurdles on the way. This will amount to taking numerous disappointments on the way and soldiering on to the end. This is a quality that I already have and am ready to apply it in journalism. My ever growing thirst for knowledge particularly concerning current affairs, and researching de tails to get facts is essential in journalism. Reporting the truth will require not just covering what is on the surface, but going deep to unravel the mystery behind any facts, an undertaking which I have exercised as a hobby in my coursework. 2. Industry Skills Audit Industry skill Evidence Multimedia skills Currently, media employers expect journalists and other media personnel to work on different platforms. Chinese History Essay Example for Free

Chinese History Essay The Tang dynasty came into existence after the collapsed of emperor Yangdi’s imperialist reign which unified China, and his death in the hands of his own trusted aid in 618 A. D. From the rubbles of rebellion and war against the emperor, a powerful General named Li Yuan; Duke of Tang and chief officer of Taiyuan City, emerged as the man of the hour. General Yuan joined the rebellion against the emperor and reestablished order and the authority of the central government when the smoke of rebellion had cleared. He became the founder of the Tang dynasty and reign as Tang Gaozu. Li Shimin (Tang Gaozong) on the other hand is the second son of General Li Yuan. Being thoroughly trained in martial skills and was very much acquainted of the administrative procedures he has acquired primarily from his exposure when his father was the principal commander of the Sue dynasty, appointed to command the army facing the Sue remaining forces, at the age of only nineteen. David Graff described his military skills as â€Å"one case where the use of the word genius does not seem at all inappropriate† Li Shimin was highly successful in his career as a military general and his military strategy according to Graff â€Å"is worth noting. † Before he became emperor in 626, he has displayed contrasting behavior with regard to his strategy, which was extremely cautious, and when he is in combat in which he always places himself â€Å"at the head of the final, decisive cavalry charge†¦. † How Well the Respective Career of the first two Tang Emperors fit to the Chinese Proverbs on Empire Building and Governance and Model to this Proverb. The proverb maybe fits rightfully to the first two Tang emperors in terms of the way they acquired the empire and how they built it to become the most prosperous and most powerful country in the world during this time. It was during the reign of these two emperors that China experienced its glorious period as their economy, culture, politics and military might attained an unequaled superiority level. Tang Gaozu seized the imperial power after a bloody rebellion that took the life of emperor Yang that mark the end of Sue dynasty, while it heralded the coming of a new dynasty under the able military leadership of Li Yuan. The reign of Tang Gaozu as the first emperor of the Tang dynasty spent its reign mostly in subduing the remaining forces loyal to Emperor Yang in different provinces and cities of the whole country. All throughout his reign he was facing major problems relating to the threat of war by the Eastern Turks and the Tibetans who posed serious challenges to China’s security, and major invasion was a constant possibility. Until his last moment in power however, Tang Gaozu’s hold in China was not sufficiently secure to risk committing the forces to war against the Turks, thus, his reign can be characterized as more on military maneuvering in order to survived the different challenges the empire were facing. The Emperor then being the chief of the military forces assigned his sons and relatives to command forces numbering thousands, and all throughout his reign, the empire did not perform political and economic activities; it was purely military that characterized this particular reign. That means, Emperor Tang Gaozu ‘conquer the empire on horseback’ but it was his son Li Shimin who ‘built the empire from horse back. ’ Tang Gaozu spent his reign in conquering the whole empire that was broken into many independent forces loyal to the former emperor. This situation has indeed proved to be difficult as the empire was unable to wage war against the Turks and the Tibetans. According to Warren Cohen, â€Å"Gaozu had little choice but to buy peace;† however, what Tang Gaozu had failed to accomplished, his son did. Tang Gaozong also known to most Chinese historians as Tang Taizong, came into power in 627. His ascendancy to the throne was not at all smooth and easy, rather marked by his murderous scheme in connivance with some of the high-ranking military officials particularly those in-charge of the palace gates. Xueshi Guo noted that Li Shimin found himself at a â€Å"disadvantage in challenging his brothers,† to be heir to throne. After getting support from some powerful military generals, he staged a military coup against his brothers in 626 after which he killed both his brothers. According Guo, bare two months after the successful coup, â€Å"Gaozu was forced to to appoint Li Shimin as his successor and two months later he handed over his power completely to Li Shimen. † Taizong Ascended to the throne in 627, which marked a new era for the Chinese society. Having warned by the officials who recalled the disastrous consequence of Sui Imperialism, they urged the new emperor to concentrate on domestic affairs. Warren Cohen noted that Taizong or Gaozong listened to their advice and implements a more diplomatic policy in relation to the Turks. Because of this diplomatic policies, Cohen Pointed out â€Å"in due course China was prosperous again, its people well fed and responsive to his rule. † Taizong was indeed a great leader but he was moderate in his expansion policies compared to his father who. Taizong had more time to economic activities that bolstered China’s growing prosperity, he re opened trade routes, and the eliminations of tolls once exacted by those who had previously controlled passage across central Asia. Cohen further noted, â€Å"Student of Tang history will note the peaceful expansion of China’s contacts with rest of the world during Taizong’s days on the throne and China’s power and wealth attracted people from all over Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. † Based on these historical accounts, the implication of the Chinese proverbs rightly fits these first two Tang emperors. They were both powerful military ruler. Li Yuan curved out the empire on ‘horseback’, that is; through rebellion and war, and reestablishing the empire through conquering every forces that challenges the new power, while Tang Gaozong or Tang Taizong, the successor, strengthened the empire and brings more prosperity, stability and peace through a more enlightened civil and military administration. They may have some difficulty to be model of this Chinese proverb, for some reason. Both had acquired imperial power through violent means. Li Yuan had staged a rebellion against the emperor Yang and had perhaps connived with some palace officials to murder the emperor. Tang Gaozong on the other hand, conspired with some powerful military generals and orchestrated a coup against his own brothers and killing them and forcing his own father to hand over to him imperial throne. Nevertheless, on the ground of their accomplishment, they can fit to be model of this proverb. Gaozu was able to curve out a new empire that has more regard to its citizens, unlike with its predecessor who was ruthless and oppressive. An empire that was willing to take on new economic challenges that brought stability, peace and prosperity to its citizens. These two Tang emperors must be credited in their efforts that has brought enormous prosperity, and respect to Chinese people all over Asia, and to the world and if making them heroes will be a compensation of their achievements for the Chinese society, then they were very much deserving of such compensation. They deserved to be model of the proverb.

My Interest in Optometry :: Career in Optometry

The sense of sight is very complex, yet fascinating. Optometrists have the amazing opportunity to further explore this sense and help patients feel their mere existence to be nothing less than a miracle. The onset of illnesses of the body also manifest in the eyes and can be diagnosed through changes that occur within them. Upon screening for changes in the eyes, diseases such as Alzheimer’s and diabetes can be diagnosed. Given that I already have a background in vision care, I ultimately find no other rewarding career for myself than one that serves patients to see and appreciate the simple pleasures around them. I treasure my experiences because I learn how to be more attentive. It is important for one to be skillfully unique; which can be achieved by holding the capacity to mold from personal experiences as well as consider opinions of others. I believe a person’s identity is refined by strong values that stem from education, religion, and culture. My background in vision care and volunteer experience demonstrates my appreciation and interest in optometry. I have always been drawn towards the health care field and had opportunities to be exposed to a range of optometric work. I have graduated from the Vision Care Technology Program at City College. The course work offered by the program has helped me come to the conclusion that optometry is the professional field I wish to pursue. It gave insight into both the medical and business aspects of the optical world. I wanted to surpass my vision care knowledge and excel by becoming an optometrist. As I rotated at the on-sight clinic in college, I worked with patients alongside optometrists and learned how to function optometric equipment. I wanted an optometrist’s perspective about the profession so I spoke to my professors. One professor was a young optometrist who had just graduated from optometry school. I was impressed at her flexible timings because she taught and also p racticed. Teaching is also something I will look into in the near future. After graduating with honors in Ophthalmic Dispensing, I transferred to State University. I am currently in the B.S/M.S program and will complete my Master’s in Biology by May 2016. The B.S/ M.S program requires taking graduate courses along with undergraduate courses, a challenge I have taken head on. Being a full-time student and taking the maximum amount of credits can be overwhelming at times but not once has it discouraged me.

Social Phobia

Social Anxiety Disorder: Social Phobia The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines social anxiety disorder as a marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment may occur (DSM). Exposure to these situations provokes an immediate anxiety response such as a panic attack (DSM). In order to be diagnosed, fear or avoidance of these situations must interfere significantly with the person’s normal routines, occupational or academic functioning, social activities or relationships, or a person must experience marked distress about having the phobia (DSM). In 400 B. C. , Hippocrates described a young man that displayed the symptoms of a social anxiety disorder. â€Å"He dare not come in company for fear he should be misused, disgraced, overshoot himself in gesture or speeches, or be sick; he thinks every man observes him† (Burton 2009). Throughout the 20th century, psychiatrists described extremely shy patients as having social phobia and social neurosis. British psychiatrists Isaac Marks and Michael Gelder proposed that social phobias be considered a distinct category separate from other simple phobias (Hope, Heimberg, Juster, & Turk 2005). In 1980, the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders introduced social phobia as an official psychiatric diagnosis. Social phobia was described as a fear of performance situations, but did not include fears of informal situations such as casual conversations or social situations. Patients with broad fears were likely to be diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder, which could not be diagnosed in conjunction with social phobia (Weiner, Freedheim, Freedheim, Reynolds, Miller, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, & Nelson 2003). In 1985, psychiatrist Michael Liebowitz and psychologist Richard Heimberg initiated a call to action for research on social phobia (Weiner, Freedheim, Freedheim, Reynolds, Miller, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, & Nelson 2003). Due to the lack of research on social anxiety disorder, the disorder came to be known by many as the â€Å"neglected anxiety disorder† (Weiner, Freedheim, Freedheim, Reynolds, Miller, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, & Nelson 2003). In 1987, the DSM-III-R introduces changes in some of the diagnostic criteria. To diagnosis social anxiety disorder the symptoms must cause â€Å"interference or marked distress† rather than simply â€Å"significant distress. † It also became possible to diagnose social phobia and avoidant personality disorder in the same patient (Weiner, Freedheim, Freedheim, Reynolds, Miller, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, & Nelson 2003). In 1994, the DSM-IV was released, and the disorder was defined as a â€Å"marked and persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or possible scrutiny by others† (Weiner, Freedheim, Freedheim, Reynolds, Miller, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, Nelson, Gallagher, & Nelson 2003). The etiology of social anxiety disorder is largely attributed to genetics, and environmental factors. Family studies of individuals with social anxiety disorder show a higher incidence of the disorder than that found in the general population, and a twin study found a concordance rate of 15. % in dizygotes and a 24. 4% concordance in monozygotes (Kedler, Neale, Kessler, Heath & Eaves 1992. ). Of course, there is very little evidence that the genetic factors attributed to social anxiety disorder extend beyond the link between environmental factors since there is very little evidence of neurobiological factors. Other than the fact that se lective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are effective treatments for social anxiety disorder, there is little evidence to implicate dysfunction of the serotonergic system (Jefferson 2001. . The lack of empirical data identifying neurobiological factors in causing the onset of social anxiety disorder is best stated in a quote by Dr. Murray B. Stein, a Professor of Psychiatry and Family & Preventive Medicine at the University of California San Diego, â€Å"It is clear that we have a long way to go before we can speak with authority about the ‘neurobiology of social phobia’† (Stein 1998. ) Therefore, environmental factors remain the most referred to etiological agent in the onset of social anxiety disorder. Parenting traits such as over control, lack of warmth or rejection, and overprotection are known to be associated with the etiology of social anxiety disorder (Brooks, & Schmidt 2008). Some individuals with social anxiety disorder associate its onset with a specific social event or interaction that was particularly embarrassing or humiliating. Such a circumstance could be considered an adverse conditioning stimulus (Jefferson 2001). There is further evidence that poor results from quality of life assessments can be attributed to social anxiety disorder. Individuals with major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder have substantially poorer quality of life than community comparison cohorts. In many cases, the quality-of-life impairments associated with these anxiety disorders are equal to or greater than those seen with other chronic medical disorders (Rapaport, Clary, Fayyad, & Endicott 2005). Social anxiety disorder is a common disorder. The lifetime prevalence of SAD is somewhere between 7% and 13% in Western countries (Furmark 2002). Furthermore, epidemiological studies have demonstrated that social anxiety disorder is the most widespread of all the anxiety disorders, and the third most common psychiatric disorder after major depression and alcohol abuse (Brooks, & Schmidt 2008). Therapy and medication are the most common treatments for social anxiety disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most utilized form of psychotherapy, and has been found to be successful in seventy-five percent of patients (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). This type of therapy focuses on reminding the patient that it is their own thoughts, not other people or situations, that determine how they behave or react (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). In therapy, the patient is taught how to recognize and change the negative thoughts they have about themselves (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). Exposure therapy is also a common form of treatment for social anxiety disorder. In this type of therapy, the patient is gradually exposed to situations that they fear most (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). Exposure therapy enables the patient to learn coping techniques, and develop the courage to face them (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). The patient is also exposed to role-playing with emphasis on developing the skills to cope with different social situations in a â€Å"safe† environment (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). There are several medications used to treat social anxiety disorder. These medications are typically serotonin reuptake inhibitors including Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). A serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) drug such as Venlafaxine may also be used as a first-line therapy for social anxiety disorder (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). Typically, the patient begins with a low dosage, and is gradually increased to a full dosage, to minimize side effects (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). It may take up to three months of treatment before the patient begins to have noticeable improvement of symptoms (â€Å"Social anxiety disorder,† 2009). Social anxiety disorder remains a largely misunderstood, and under researched, disorder. Momentum through increased clinical research, in depth understanding through treatment, and stricter guidelines for proper diagnosis are positive indications that Psychology has recognized the debilitating effects of social anxiety disorder on patients. In time, clinicians will be better prepared to treat patients suffering from this disorder, and will improve the lives of patients. References Brooks, C. A. , & Schmidt, L. A. (2008). The Slavery Of African Americans - 860 Words

When you’re in an environment and everything around you is disorderly, clearly low funded, under law blockade, and the neighborhoods are infested with drugs and weaponry; then you’re at war. African people have been at war with society, and in spite of the fact that their weapons has slightly been adjusted over the years, it still remains the same endless war we’ve been facing since the settling of African people in the Americas. African people could never fully integrate with the shared heritage and experience within the African identity. Wars have been going on for times on end, from Emmitt Till to the Rosewood Massacre. In an unrelenting war, tactics such as black rationalization, cultural justification, mass propaganda, and or indoctrination brought among us from this war. As to improving a solution to this war, Marcus Garvey proposed, â€Å"The Negro will have to build his own government, industry, art, science, literature, and culture, before the world wil l stop to consider him.† In continuance, one Negro has to compel his own way of life, not to become an anarchist in society but for him not to be an outcast in societies’ standard social system. As W. E. B DuBois and Marcus Garvey were both forms of pan-Africanism, it was the differences in beliefs and their methods on hand that would impact the effects of the future. Garvey makes considerable presentation in raising recognition and consciousness of the African struggles.
